Getting to Kootenay Lake from Calgary

TranBC, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure's own blog, describes Highway 3 as running "along the southern edge of BC and across the Alberta border," also known as "the Crowsnest Highway," and states, of the same road in the Creston-to-Alberta direction: "Leaving Creston, the time machine travels through Cranbrook, Fernie and onto towards Crowsnest [Pass]."

explorecrestonvalley.com states the last BC leg, Cranbrook to Creston on Highway 3, as "45 minutes" to Yahk plus "another 30 minutes" on to Creston (about 1 hour 15 minutes total); it states no full drive time from Calgary itself.

Highway 3 reaches Creston, at the lake's south end, directly from Cranbrook. The Kootenay Pass stretch of Highway 3 lies further west, between Salmo and Creston, and only comes into it if you continue past Creston toward Nelson by road instead of by ferry.

From Creston, Highway 3A runs north along the East Shore to the Kootenay Bay ferry terminal, where the free Kootenay Lake Ferry crosses to Balfour — the way to reach Nelson, Balfour or the North Shore without driving all the way around through Kootenay Pass.
